It is a highly biodiverse area that has been described as "America's Ark" and the "Biological Crossroads of North America". The National Park Service established the Big Thicket National Preserve (BTNP) within the region in and it is recognized as a Location: Southeast Texas, U.S. Sponsored by: Texas Forestry Association and Texas A&M Forest Service Location: Texas A&M Forest Service Hudson Office, Texas Forest Service Loop, Lufkin, TX Description: Open to FFA and 4-H students in Angelina County and the surrounding area. Comparison of vegetation types in southeast Texas with those for the while of the southeastern. United States coastal plain showed widespread congruence of types. Major discrepancies were the lack of a pine flatwoods type in Texas and the presence in Texas of a flatland hardwood type and a pine—oak type more characteristic of the Piedmont Cited by: The model included 3 variables measured at a km, scale: forest cohesion, forest diversity, and forest–agriculture edge density, adequately describing important, habitat characteristics for.

Introduction. The US Department of Agriculture-Forest Service (USFS) has periodically estimated and published the extent of forest cover and timber resources in the United States as part of its Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program (USFS,Frayer and Furnival,Reams and van Deusen, ).This information, published since the s, is used by state forest agencies, private Cited by: This paper reports a study that tested the utility of Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data to map and estimate the regional forest resources in east Texas at the FIA phase I (forest and non-forest) level.

Southern Research Station. The Big Thicket forest region once covered more than 2, acres (8, km 2) in east Texas. The Spaniards, who once ruled the region, defined its boundaries in the north as El Camino Real de los Tejas / Old San Antonio Road, a trail system that ran from Central Texas to Nacogdoches; in the south as La Bahia Road or Atascosito Road, a trail that ran from southwest Louisiana into southeast.

The East Texas pine-hardwood region, often called the Piney Woods, is the principal forest region in Texas. The county region forms the western edge of the southern pine region, extending from Bowie and Red River counties in northeast Texas to Jefferson, Harris, and Waller counties in southeast Texas.

Trees of East Texas is drawn from Robert A. Vines' monumental Trees, Shrubs, and Woody Vines of the Southwest (University of Texas Press, ). Without sacrificing the essential detail of the original work, this guide has been designed to travel info the field for on-the-spot by: 9.
